What is Gadolinium?

An MRI scan allows medical professionals to view a clear picture of a patient’s internal organs and tissues, while an MRA is simply a specific type of MRI done to study blood vessels.  Gadolinium is a contrast agent sometimes injected into a patient’s vein prior to an MRI or MRA to help medical professionals distinguish blood vessels from nearby tissues in the scanned image.

Gadolinium was declared safe for use by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1988.  However, in 1997 it was first learned that gadolinium or gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA) cause NSF or NFD in patients with acute or chronic kidney problems.  Trade names for the gadolinium-based contrast agents include: Magnevist, MultiHance, Omniscan, OptiMARK and ProHance.

In May 2007, the FDA asked manufacturers of all five GBCAs to add new warnings to their labels to describe a patient’s risk of developing NSF/NFD through use of these agents.  At present, the FDA continues to investigate reports of the skin disorders NSF and NFD in patients who received a contrast during an MRI or MRA.

Gadolinium side effects

Gadolinium or GBCAs given to a patient with an acute or severe kidney problem may cause NSF or NFD, potentially life threatening ailments.  Symptoms of these ailments include: skin hardening or tightening, skin discoloration, the development of skin patches, skin swelling, skin burning, muscle or joint weakness, difficulty bending joints or joint stiffness, pain in the hip bones or ribs, or eye spots.  Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
