What is asbestos?

Asbestos is highly fibrous minerals with separable, long and thin fibers.  Asbestos fibers have many industrial purposes due to their resistance to heat, as well as because they are strong enough and flexible enough to be spun and woven. Due to the durability and fibrous nature, asbestos that gets into lung tissue will remain for long periods of time and may manifest into an asbestos-related cancer.

Asbestos comes in two general types: amphibole and chrysotile. Amphibole fibers are generally considered more harmful to the human body because they stay in the lungs longer than chrysotile.

Asbestos Work Environments

People who develop an asbestos cancer, such as mesothelioma or asbestos-related lung cancer, likely worked in environments or occupations where there was direct exposure to asbestos. Some of these work environments and occupations include:

Work Environments

  • Automotive repair sites (brakes & clutches)
  • Construction sites
  • Industrial work sites
  • Manufacturing sites manufacturing asbestos products (insulation, roofing, building, materials)
  • Maritime sites
  • Mining sites
  • Oil refineries
  • Power plants
  • Railroads
  • Sand or abrasive manufacturers
  • Shipyards / ships / shipbuilders
  • Steel mills

Occupations

  • Asbestos removal workers (abatement workers)
  • Auto mechanics
  • Boilermakers
  • Bricklayers

Asbestos Diseases / Asbestos Cancer

People who were exposed to asbestos may not develop an asbestos-related disease until decades later.  Asbestos-related diseases are as follows:

Mesothelioma - Mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers many of the body's organs. Mesothelioma can be found in the sac lining the chest (pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), or the lining around the heart (pericardium).  The most common site of these malignant cells is the pleura, which is the outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity.

  • Asbestos Lung Cancer – Lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
  • Asbestosis - Asbestosis is a fibrosis or scarring of the lung tissue.

Mesothelioma, Lung Cancer

A person who’s been exposed to asbestos won't develop an asbestos cancer immediately. But prolonged contact with particles of asbestos may facilitate the development of malignant cells over a period of many years.

Someone suffering from an asbestos cancer, mesothelioma or lung cancer, physically shows some symptoms, such as shortness of breath, weight loss, chest pain and loss of appetite. After cancer is detected, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and other treatments are advised for patients. These are expensive treatments which many people may not be able to afford. An asbestos lawyer/mesothelioma lawyer with Jim S. Adler & Associates can help you seek a monetary award from those responsible to help with this expense and to compensate you or your loved ones for the pain endured.
