Airbags have been in use for many years now. In fact, some of the major U.S. automobile manufacturers began installing airbags in some of their vehicles in the early 1970s. While they do save lives, airbags can also cause some unforeseen problems. Children riding in the front seat can be seriously injured or killed when an airbag deploys in a crash. An airbag is not a soft, billowy pillow. To do its job, an airbag comes out of the dashboard at up to 200 miles per hour - faster than the blink of an eye. The force of an airbag can hurt those who are too close to it.

Even when one is cautious, airbags can be unforgiving. When a manufacturer designs, produces, or installs an airbag incorrectly, serious injuries and deaths can result. Defective airbags include, but are not limited to, those that deploy with too much force, deploy in minor collisions when they are not otherwise needed, or fail to deploy under circumstances in which they should.

car seat safety & related injuries: The growing awareness of safe driving and state safety laws has alerted the general public and parents to the importance of using car seats for their small children whenever and wherever they are driving. As this use of car seats and infant seats is on the rise, so is the rise of defective child restraint related injuries and deaths of children in car seats. Despite numerous campaigns to promote the use of safety belts and car seats, and despite child occupant protection laws in every state, motor vehicle crashes continue to kill and seriously injure children at an alarming rate. Each year approximately 1,800 children ages 14 and under are killed as occupants in motor vehicle accidents and wrecks, and more than 280,000 are injured.

If designed, installed and used correctly, seat belts save lives. The primary reason seat belts save lives has to do with the physics of mechanical forces produced during an automobile accident. However, seat belts, if not designed, installed and used properly, can cause serious injuries in a motor vehicle collision.

There are millions of motor vehicles on the road today that have defective restraint systems and seat belts. The auto manufacturers have been aware of these defects for decades however, have done nothing to warn the public or change the design of their seat belts to make them safer.

Tread separation is in the news a lot these days because of the recent Firestone tire recall. Tread separation, however, is not a new problem. Most tires manufactured today are steel belted radial tires, and tread separation is the most common type of failure in steel belted radial tires. When the tread separates from the tire carcass or the inner plies, it can frequently cause a blowout. Tread separation can also cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in collisions and rollovers. Loss of control is especially likely in vehicles with a high center of gravity, such as many popular sport utility vehicles.

Tires are built in layers on a tire building machine. The tire is built in the green or uncured state, and the core or carcass of the tire is sometimes referred to as the "green tire".

Vehicles may be equipped with side saddle gas tanks or have gas tanks which are mounted on the outside of the truck's frame; current trucks have gas tanks located inside the truck's frame. Trucks equipped with side saddle gas tanks are extremely dangerous due to lack of protection of the gas tank, and in the event of an accident the passengers may suffer serious burns and death from an exploding gas tank. The public was not made aware of the potential for serious injury and death that trucks with side saddle gas tanks posed. Many vehicles that have dangerous gas tanks can be fixed by the manufacturer for a small price, although many vehicle corporations knowingly choose to risk the lives of passengers than spend a few extra dollars to fix potential gas tank problems.
