A helicopter crash lawyer can help

Helicopters look like fun to ride, and they certainly can be, particularly on what are called "sight tours" of vistas such as the Grand Canyon or Manhattan Island. Yet these same whirlybirds which whisk us through the air much closer to ground level than planes can take a fearsome toll in accidents.

Helicopter accidents are far more common than airplane accidents. How much so? America suffers an estimated 90 times more helicopter accidents than airplane accidents. These accidents can lead to hundreds of fatalities per year and can occur for a variety of reasons, including pilot error, air traffic controller error, improper maintenance, engine failure, manufacturing negligence or other mechanical problems.

In such cases, responsibility for such a helicopter crash can belong to the pilot, the company which owns the helicopter, the company which commissioned its use or the company which manufactured the helicopter. Regardless of which person or persons is responsible, if you or a loved one has suffered harm due to a helicopter accident, you may need experienced legal help. Helicopter safety measures can be thin

As with major airlines, the nation's helicopter transportation firms are passenger-based businesses. Yet helicopter passengers aren't protected nearly as much as are airline passengers. That's in part because they are regulated differently by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Helicopters are not inspected as often as planes, and they don't have safety standards on a level with other kinds of aircraft. For instance, helicopters aren't required to feature such equipment as a flight data recorder and terrain-awareness devices. On top of all this, more catastrophic events can occur with a helicopter, yet helicopters have fewer safety features to offset such dangers.

Even helicopters which are designed for emergency medical rescues often fall from the sky. With no wings to support it, a helicopter is completely dependent on its propellers to stay aloft and unable to glide for a more controlled descent and landing.

Helicopters also are used often for work purposes, from professional photography to ferrying employees to an offshore oil drilling platform. For any of these occupations, simply riding in a helicopter introduces an element of risk.

Medical helicopter transports under fire

Helicopters are increasingly being used to transport medical patients either in an emergency situation, or as part of routine transfer between medical facilities. In 1980, there were just 30 medical helicopters in use around the U.S. Today, there are more than 650.

There are several reasons for this increase. First, the aging Baby Boomers are entering a stage in their lives when they are at risk to stroke, heart attack, and other events that require immediate medical attention. Secondly, rural hospitals are moving away from specialist and long-term care, leaving that instead to urban hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Although medical transports can occur by air or ground, helicopters are becoming more widely used as a form of general transportation across the U.S., and are seen as a faster and more comfortable method of transferring patients between facilities. Currently, medical helicopters or air ambulance transports an average of 350,000 patients per year.
