More products included in peanut butter recall

On Friday, March 2, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Indiana State Department of Health announced that three brands of peanut butter toppings also were part of the recall of products in which salmonella was found.  The three brands added to the list are:

-Sonic brand ready-to-use peanut butter topping in 6 pound, 10½ ounce cans. Sonic restaurant outlets used the topping until Feb. 16, the time of the recall. The topping was used to make peanut butter and peanut butter/fudge shakes, peanut butter sundaes and peanut butter fudge sundaes.

-Carvel peanut butter topping in 6 pound, 10 ounce cans. Carvel used the topping until Feb. 16. This particular topping was used in these Carvel ice cream products: Chocolate Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter Treasure, Peanut Butter and Jelly and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Sundae Dasher. The recall includes any other customized products containing the peanut butter topping, including peanut butter-flavored ice cream in ice cream cakes.

-Hungerford Smith Peanut Butter Dessert Topping in the 6 pound, 10 ounce cans. This topping may be used by retail and restaurant outlets throughout the United States, but is not available for direct purchase by the public.

All the products were contaminated in the ConAgra Foods plant in Sylvester, Ga. The plant sent bulk peanut butter to its plant in Humboldt, Tennessee, where it was used to make the toppings.

“These products were recalled on Feb. 16, but may still be in someone’s household,” said Lynae Granzow, state epidemiologist. “Finding the Salmonella tennessee strain in the Georgia plant further suggests the contamination likely took place before the product reached consumers.”

Actual salmonella infections have variable symptoms.  Most infections range from diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. However, the majority of people infected, recover on their own without treatment.  Those with weakened immune systems (young children, the elderly or those already ill) are especially at risk when having consumed salmonella-tainted food.
