| New study may help mesothelioma sufferers |
|
Mesothelioma is a cancer usually found in the lining of the lungs. Almost all known cases are caused by exposure to asbestos. The sharp, fibrous mineral penetrates the lining when it is inhaled, causing cell disruption and can eventually lead to mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and other chronic or fatal diseases. Usually these diseases develop over time, from 20 to 40 years after first exposure and are more likely to occur in people who have worked with asbestos for long periods of time.
Mesothelioma is almost always fatal. The average lifespan of a patient diagnosed with this disease is 18 months.
However there is currently active research to find new treatment methods that could extend that lifespan. A study co-sponsored by the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is testing the effectiveness of a specialized drug called bevacizumab when used in combination with chemotherapy. Bevacizumab is an antibody that attacks cancer cells and prevents them from developing new blood vessels so they can no longer spread. The drug is given by injection just like chemotherapy.
There are several objectives of the study including finding out whether or not bevacizumab helps slow down the cancer compared to chemotherapy treatments only, confirm that the combination is safe to use, and to find out the overall outcomes of both groups of patients.
There are also several eligibility requirements. The patient must be 18 or older, have no prior allergic reaction to any of the drugs used, cannot be currently undergoing radiation treatments, and have a life expectancy of over three months, among other requirements. The cancer also cannot be treatable by surgery or other methods that could increase lifespan.
About 2,500 people die of mesothelioma every year in the United States – about the same amount of people who die of passive cigarette smoke. Almost all cases are directly related to the workplace.
If you have been exposed to asbestos for long periods of time resulting in mesothelioma, lung cancer, or any other asbestos-related disease, you may be able to recover your medical bills and other lost finances. Treatments for these deadly diseases can sometimes run into the millions of dollars. Most of us are not able to cover those costs ourselves.
