Car accidents are leading cause of death of young people

Teen driving accidents lawyerA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Research Note released in January 2005 stated that auto accidents are the leading cause of death for all ages from 3 to 34 years old. Overall, it is the 8th leading cause of death for Americans today. Auto accidents also ranked 3rd overall in Years of Life Lost, which measures the average number of years a person would have been expected to live. Cancer and heart disease ranked first and second respectively.

The purpose of the Research Note was to determine exactly how many people die in  a car accident across the country, and its ranking among other leading causes of death. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) keeps comprehensive data about deaths in the U.S., and ranks a list of 68 causes of death. However auto accidents are not considered a separate category in NCHS data collection, and instead are grouped into a general category of “Unintentional Injuries.”

Because the NHTSA is primarily concerned with auto accidents – and finding ways to prevent them – the Administration used its own resources to identify and rank auto accidents from within the statistics. It also created the Years of Life Lost calculation to underline the tremendous toll that auto accidents have on the lives of young people. Even though among all Americans car crashes are the eighth-leading cause of death, they are the third-leading cause of lost years of life.

Among age groups outside of the 3-34 years old range, car wrecks ranked 8th among infants under 1 year old, 2nd for toddlers 1-2 years old, 3rd for the 35-44 range, and 8th for those 44-65. Auto accident did not rate in the top ten for seniors 65+.
