Millions suffer brain injury problems
A staggering 1.5 million people in the U.S. sustain a brain injury every year. The Brain Injury Association of America defines Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as: “An insult to the brain, not of degenerative or congenital nature caused by an external physical force that may produce a diminished or altered state of consciousness, which results in an impairment of cognitive abilities or physical functioning. It can also result in the disturbance of behavioral or emotional functioning.”
There are several causes of brain injuries, but the leading cause is car accidents accounting for 44% of TBIs. Falls, assaults, and sporting activities – especially contact sports – can also result in brain injury.

Brain injuries result in a whole range of physical, mental, and emotional problems. Some injuries can heal over time, but others may have lasting effects years after the injury event and in many cases are permanent. Physical effects include loss of balance, regular dizziness, headaches, speech impediments, and seizures. Mental problems like short-term and long-term memory loss, difficulty with concentration, and organizational problems are common. And more than any other injury, brain injury can dramatically affect emotional health, increasing anxiety, mood swings, and behavioral difficulties.

Recovery from a brain injury is a long process involving several different medical areas and can include surgery, physical rehabilitation, speech pathology, psychological care, and counseling. Often a brain injury victim requires care and rehabilitation for many years, even for the rest of his or her life.

The tragedy is that many of these injuries could have been avoided. Negligence on the part of others plays a large role in too many cases. Drunk or otherwise negligent drivers, unsafe workplaces, unsafe places of business, low safety standards, personal assaults – all of these and more result in the majority of “accidents” that lead to debilitating and often permanent brain damage.
