Boy loses his arm after pit bull attack
It’s often said that “it doesn’t take a rocket scientist” to understand certain things. In Houston, we fully embrace that concept, given the fact that our city does, in fact, have rocket scientists. But people in Houston or anywhere can appreciate a no-brainer, and one is that pit bull dogs — while not always dangerous — do, in fact, cause great harm to many people.
The latest tragic case involved a 10-year-old boy in Michigan who was left home alone while his parents were out of town and his older brother neglected him. When the brother returned home, his younger sibling was being attacked by the family’s pit bull — attacked so badly that his right arm had to be amputated and he was in a hospital in serious condition.Pit bull defenders will howl that this was only one case, and that their pit bull is fine. Well, tell that to this boy, who’s lost an arm for the remainder of his life. And besides, the pit bull in question — which reportedly was “put down” — already had attacked a grown man visiting the same home, so the signs were there. You don’t leave a small child alone with such an animal — ever.
If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to a dog bite or other form of attack by a pit bull or other dog, a dog bite lawyer with Jim S. Adler & Associates can help. The firm offers a free case review and, if your case is accepted, works on a contingency basis with no retainer fee. You pay nothing unless your case prevails, and then only a percent of the recovery.
In short, your case will receive a rocket scientist’s level of skilled and professional treatment, even if the lapse which led to it did not.

it is very, very, horrible that something like this happened to a 10 year old child! first of all the child should not have been left at home and second you cant blame the dog for the way he was raised. i have a pit bull /bull mastiff and i have had my children around him the entire time and nothing points to him being aggressive! any dog can be mean and tear a persons arm off so people dont just point your fingers at this type of dog being mean because it all just depends on how it was raised. in fact my sister has the parents to my dog and they have been raised right so they dont attack people.

Excellent comments from both of you. Thank you so much.
Clearly, parents should be more responsible not only for their kids but also for their dogs, and ultimately it appears human irresponsibility was the key here.
But while not all pit bulls are dangerous, as the blog clearly states, not every dog is capable of maiming and killing. But some dogs are capable of such violence, and those dogs include pit bulls. So if you buy a pit bull, you are buying a dog with the potential and the capacity, if not the propensity, of doing great harm. By contrast, if you buy, say, a King Charles Spaniel, you are not buying such a dog. It’s just something that’s worth taking into account when you pick a pooch.
The difference between a pit bull and another breed is that a pit bull has the capability to cause great harm. I have a dachshund that is a great dog. I will defend that breed until I’m blue in the face. However, my dog actually bit me once that caused some cuts to my face.
My point is all dogs bite. It’s just with a pit bull, you could lose an arm.
Over and over again we hear the “not my dog” speech. The statistics speak for themselves. When will it end?

It has very little to do with the breed Boo and saintclair. Pit Bull is in fact a generic name for many breeds and in no way identifies a single breed. This truly is a tragedy that this little boy lost his arm; but the blame falls to the parents of which, A. who leaves their 10 year old child at home alone unattended and B. most likely as evidenced by the neglect of their child, also neglected to raise their animal right. I was brought up with numerous breeds including Am. Staffs, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and American Bull Terriers. None of our dogs ever attacked anyone or ever showed any aggression towards people in general. If a dog is raised right and treated with kindness, respect, and its natural instincts are taken into consideration, a “pit bull” makes a perfectly fine pet. Our family currently has an American Bull(of which is identified as the all feared pit bull) and he is the kindest gentlest canine we’ve ever owned. He loves children, lets the grandkids ride him, gets weekly trips to McDonalds for ice cream cones, and is scared of the grandparents’ Yorshire Terrier; but he was raised to respect people and other animals. I hope these parents are looked at closely because putting a dog that has the propensity to maim and or kill in the house with a 10 year old alone wreaks of amazing parenting.
