Another construction crane collapse claims a life

by Bruce Westbrook

It’s official — or at least painfully obvious: America is enduring a plague of construction crane collapse accidents. And anyone who’s near any of these towering cranes — often the height of a skyscraper — should be wary, be alert and be quick to leave the vicinity as soon as possible.

It shouldn’t be that way. Ordinary citizens shouldn’t have to fear for their lives whenever remotely near a construction site on which a construction crane is being used. But facts are facts, and the fact is, after construction crane collapses in New York City (with two), Houston, Miami, Las Vegas and Oklahoma City recently, yet another construction crane collapse now tragically arises in Quincy, MA. Sadly, they’re becoming almost routine, though their toll in lives is anything but that. Rather, it’s devastating.

In Quincy, a young man with a promising future is dead because he placed trust in the company for which he worked and the equipment it provided. By all rights, he should have been entitled to such trust, but as it turns out, he was killed Thursday when a leg of a Goliath crane being dismantled at a shipyard fell on top of him.

The crane, which can stand as high as 25 stories, was being taken apart. The plan was to send the crane, which was built in the ’70s and had long been inactive, to shipyard interests in Romania. The plan was not for Robert Harvey, 28, to lose his life and for his wife to lose her husband of almost two years.

Federal officials of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are studying the case, but why stop there? With the epidemic nature of construction crane collapses in America, sweeping regulatory actions are desperately needed. Too often, construction cranes are operated without strict safety guidelines.

If you or a loved one has suffered due to a construction crane collapse, the law firm of Jim S. Adler & Associates can help. Besides gaining you financial compensation, your action could force greater scrutiny, vigilance and safety measures than are in effect now. After all, a towering problem needs towering solutions.

It is scary how often this is happening lately. I don’t know if it is the construction or a lack of safety inspections, but something needs to be done to curb any further accidents.
