Houston woman turns burn injury tragedy into triumphant crusade

Burn injuries can be among the most cruel and debilitating of any harm a human can suffer. From emotional scars to disfigurement to excruciating pain to lengthy and arduous rehabilitation, burn injuries not only are severe, but can be severely damaging even to a person’s will to live.

In Houston, fortunately, one woman has made it her crusade to fight back against burn injuries not only with a fierce will to live, but by providing special care and treatment of burn victims. That woman is Justina Page, who responded to a family tragedy in a fire nine years ago to create the Amos House of Faith, which offers support groups and other resources to families who have endured a burn injury.

In 1999, Mrs. Page suffered burns over 55 per cent of her body when a fire destroyed her southeast Houston home. Even worse, the fire claimed the life of Amos, one of her twin 22-month-old sons. All but one of her other five children also were injured, but they survived. Now she has named her crusade after little Amos.

Mrs. Page has more plans for her work, including a projected “Family Room” that she hopes to open near the Texas Medical Center to provide temporary lodging and other support for families of burn victims.

As a service of the Amos House of Faith, Mrs. Page also has created an After Burns Club, a support group for burn survivors and their families, who meet at Shriners hospitals in Houston or Galveston to share fellowship.

Other human beings have responded to tragedies by finding a means of channeling their loss into positive work for society as a whole. But few human beings have endured as much and then offered so much as Mrs. Page is doing in Houston. Her crusade deserves not just our attention, but our support as well. Little Amos wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
