Quaid’s heparin ordeal underscores need for a heparin lawsuit

by Bruce Westbrook

For Houston-born actor Dennis Quaid, star of Disney’s The Rookie, The Alamo and The Parent Trap, the pain of almost losing his twin children to a heparin overdose remains quite real. On today’s Oprah Winfrey Show, a tape revealed Quaid on an emotional visit to the Los Angeles hospital where the near-tragedy occurred, and he then discussed the event with hostess Oprah Winfrey, who assessed other defective drug dangers.

As Winfrey pointed out, more people die from medical mistakes each year in America than from breast cancer, AIDS and car accidents — combined. That’s not a problem. It’s an epidemic. And epidemics demand action.

Though Quaid twins Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace survived, others haven’t been so lucky. Overdosed or contaminated heparin has caused many people to die in America, largely as a result of manufacturer negligence. But with any form of harm caused by heparin, victims or their survivors at least have a legal option in a heparin lawsuit.

Such lawsuits not only can provide heparin victims and their families with much needed financial compensation for the losses caused by others’ negligence, but also can send a resounding message to drug manufacturers and others that they will be held accountable for their mistakes. As a result, it’s hoped that far fewer such heparin injury incidents will occur in the future.

Quaid and his wife, Kimberly, filed a lawsuit against Baxter Healthcare Corp., which provided the drug, and were awarded $750,000 in damages. The state of California also fined the hospital, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, for its mistake in administering a dose of the blood thinner which was 1,000 times more than needed. This error was caused in part by improper labeling by the manufacturer.

Contaminated heparin also has been a problem since supplies of the drug were produced in China in compromised form and shipped to America. This heparin, too, can be severely damaging, if not fatal.
