When drug giants err, as with Reglan, an Adler defective drugs lawyer can help

by Bruce Westbrook

Americans don’t like being at anyone’s mercy, but that’s clearly the case with the pharmaceutical giants which create and sell drugs to millions of us, making billions of dollars in the process. Such drugs aren’t always fully vetted by such corporations or by government watchdog the Food and Drug Administration. As a result, many innocent victims can suffer injury and even death — all because they took a prescribed medication.

One such risky remedy is Reglan, the brand name often given to digestive-aid drugs featuring metoclopramide. Other brands with the drug include Maxolon and Octamide.

Doctors often prescribe Reglan, Maxolon or Octamide for persons who suffer digestive tract disorders, from nausea and vomiting to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Reglan is supposed to aid digestion by boosting the upper digestive tract’s muscle contractions, enabling the stomach to empty its contents into the intestines more readily.

But even if that’s achieved, serious side effects can erupt from use of Reglan. The worst is acquiring Tardive Dyskinesia, a condition marked by involuntary twitching and jerking of muscles throughout the body. Victims even may have trouble walking and talking — and what’s worse is that there is no known treatment or cure for such Reglan side effects. Victims also may suffer from Tardive Dystonia, a comparable condition in which muscles contract, contort or spasm involuntarily and painfully, often in the face and neck, but also the legs, arms and remainder of the body.

At most, doctors should prescribe Reglan only for short-term use, since long-term use is especially associated with Tardive Dyskinesia and Tardive Dystonia. It’s also important to keep in mind that the very young and the elderly — largely women — are most susceptible. But any use of Reglan by anyone brings potential risks.

If you believe that you or a loved one may be suffering from Tardive Dyskinesia,  Tardive Dystonia  or other Reglan side effects as a result of using Reglan, see your physician immediately. Then also consider engaging a Reglan lawyer with Jim S. Adler & Associates.

An Adler defective drugs lawyer can hold accountable the pharmaceutical companies whose negligence has caused such suffering. Only when negligent companies are held responsible for their mistakes can we hope to right such wrongs and increase the chances that comparable negligence won’t arise and harm future patients.

Reglan lawsuits also can seek just and fair financial compensation for individual victims’ medical bills, lost present and future wages, and pain and suffering. Such economic awards may not eliminate Tardive Dyskinesia, Tardive Dystonia or other harmful Reglan side effects, but they can ease the burdens faced by innocent victims of a Reglan injury. And with an Adler Reglan attorney at your side, such burdens need not be faced alone.
