‘Wonderful’ pit bull attacks Pittsburgh Steelers star’s son
Often the key to fixing a problem is to overcome denial. That’s why AA members confront their demons and proclaim themselves alcoholics, rather than pretending they’re just social drinkers. But many pit bull owners are different. While the canine carnage continues, they’re in denial, ceaselessly ranting that pit bulls are wonderful dogs and why don’t other people quit casting them in a bad light?
We don’t because we, at least, are not in denial. We are well aware that virtually any pit bull can be a dangerous dog, and we wonder why people buy such potential killers when they could have, instead, a sweet little mutt.
Perhaps the young son of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison is wondering about this, too, because he’s now in the hospital.
It seems his dad had had no problem with the dog, whom his agent described as “wonderful.” Well, this “wonderful” dog, out of the blue, bit Harrison’s 2-year-old son in the thigh, and the boy had to be hospitalized for serious injuries. That’s not even to mention his emotional trauma.
Denial means rationalizing or spinning this event to rebuff any talk of limiting or controlling these too often aggressive animals. It means letting little James Harrison III suffer in silence because, after all, a “wonderful” dog attacked him. Perhaps he should feel that this was all his fault. Of course, even two people who tried to help him also were attacked by the dog, and one of them needed stitches. Must be a lot of fault to go around.
Dog bites are serious business. In fact, dogs kill people — and not always are they pit bulls. But any dog whose breed has such a history should be regarded warily and handled carefully, not endlessly praised by those in denial for how “wonderful” they are. That kind of mindset only opens the gates for more and more innocents to be maimed, mauled and even killed by dogs. It’s gotten so bad that some states, including Texas, have made new laws by which dog owners can go to prison when their dog kills a human being.
If you or a family member has suffered a dog bite attack, don’t suffer in silence. Alert a dog bite lawyer with Jim S. Adler & Associates and get the message across to negligent dog owners that such attacks won’t be tolerated in the legal realm. There, at least, denials are put where they belong: on a short leash.
