Unsafe charter bus lines cause many bus accident deaths, injuries

by Bruce Westbrook

As a vintage bus line slogan goes, “Leave the driving to us.” Trouble is, when you do that you also leave safety precautions to bus lines, and safety doesn’t always lead their to-do list.

Take the Jan. 2, 2008 Texas bus accident in which one Houston passenger was killed and 17 were injured seriously, with two of them losing arms in the crash. The driver fell asleep at the wheel, ran off U.S. 59, over-corrected and flipped the bus on its side, where it was hit by a pickup truck. Again, a complex and catastrophic traffic accident happened very quickly.

The National Transportation Safety Board has studied that tragedy and just announced it found gaping holes in federal regulations applied to charter bus lines. For instance, it seems the driver only had a license to drive the bus in Texas, yet it was headed from Monterrey, Mexico to Houston. And too often, the NTSB says, a non-compliant bus can be registered and operated in the United States.

Now, too late, the feds are preaching tighter regulations for the charter bus industry. But better late than never.

For many victims, it will always be too late. In August of 2008, 17 Houston passengers were killed and 38 were injured in a charter bus accident in North Texas while they were en route to a religious gathering. Two months later, a casino tour bus flipped over in California, killing eight people and injuring 30. That bus lacked a valid license plate, as well as seat belts, a common failing of chartered buses.
