Graco baby stroller defective product recall spurred by children’s fingertip amputations

by Bruce Westbrook

American babies are being harmed by strollers which are supposed to protect them. Instead, certain model numbers of Alano, Passage, Travel Systems and Spree Strollers are causing fingertip amputations or cut fingers in infants who put their digits in canopy hinges as strollers open or close.

Graco Children’s Products Inc. of Atlanta, which produces the strollers sold at Target, Wal-Mart and other retailers, this week issued a recall of 1.5 million strollers, all made in China. Other retailers selling them between October 2004 and last December are Kmart, Sears, Fred Meyer, Burlington Coat Factory, AAFES, Navy Exchange, Meijer, Babies R Us and Toys R Us.

While issuing the recall through the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Graco asked consumers to cease using the strollers and to contact Graco about getting a free protective hinge cover repair kit. For that purpose, visit www.gracobaby.com.

In a separate defective products recall, a million strollers purchased in the United States and produced by British-based McLaren also have been targeted due to children’s fingertips being amputated by defective hinges. And Graco itself had another massive recall in 2005, when two of its strollers failed to latch adequately and injured 230 infants. Then, more than a million strollers were recalled.

Graco’s latest recall of 1.5 million defective baby strollers is the largest in U.S. history. Families whose children have suffered amputations, lacerations or other injuries due to such strollers deserve compensation.
