Are drunk drivers as bad as terrorists? No — worseby Bruce Westbrook
The answer to each question is simple: Drunk drivers are slaughtering us. They’ve been doing so virtually since autos were born, and though death numbers have risen and fallen, they’ve never disappeared. Put simply: Drunks kill — and isn’t that reason enough to do something about it? Yet for many, news of another drunk driving fatality seems routine and, unless a loved one was killed, acceptable. Drunk drivers seem to be just a fact of life. But not all facts are unalterable. Take this fact: On Easter Sunday, a three-time DUI offender got drunk again and drove again. He then slammed his speeding car into the back of another car on I35E in Lewisville, TX, killing its driver and her daughter, 13. Three others in their car were injured and hospitalized. The drunk, who was free on parole after his third DUI arrest, is expected to face murder charges. If zero tolerance had been in force, perhaps this man would have been in jail or in rehab, or perhaps he’d have been required to have an ignition interlock device attached to his car, which would prevent him from starting his vehicle if he were inebriated. Instead, the state of Texas set him free to get drunk and drive again — and kill two innocent people in a horrific DFW-area tragedy. Outraged readers of one website which reported the crime likened drunk driving to a terrorist act. That wouldn’t be a bad comparison if it didn’t flatter terrorists. The fact is, even the most vile and violent foreign terrorists haven’t inflicted anywhere near the harm and damage to America as have homegrown drunk drivers on a steady basis. In fact, neither have foreign armies. Since 1982, drunk drivers have killed more than half a million American mothers, fathers, daughters and sons. That’s far more deaths than all Americans killed by every foreign enemy in all armed conflicts since World War I. Such DUI accident victims get no second chances — no rehab, no parole, no probation, no early release. Such reprieves are reserved only for drunk drivers, who then go on to drive drunk again. On average, drunk drivers kill an American every 39 minutes. And DUI car crash accidents account for fully a third of the nation’s traffic deaths, or about 12,000 fatalities. Whether or not you survive, MADD estimates that 30 per cent of all Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related car crash in their lifetime. Do you still see this as “just one of those things”? Or are you starting to see that Americans must take charge and take back their roads and highways from drunk lawbreakers who kill and maim so many. And one way to do it is to press a drunk driving lawsuit against those who are responsible. If you or a loved one has been harmed by a drunk driver, notify a drunk driving attorney with Jim S. Why should we get mad about drunk drivers, like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)? Why should we have zero tolerance toward drunk drivers, pushing for more and stronger laws? Why are drunk driving car wreck accidents like a war against America? And why should anything change?
