Listeria in cantaloupe food poisoning takes historic 29 lives

by Bruce Westbrook

The recent outbreak of listeria food poisoning via tainted cantaloupes from a Colorado farm now has claimed 29 lives, making it the deadliest food poisoning epidemic in America since 1924 — 87 years ago.

That’s according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, which also reports that 139 people in 28 states have become ill or have died from the food poisoning outbreak.

The Rocky Ford cantaloupes involved have been removed from store shelves since they were recalled Sept. 14. But the disturbing thing is that listeria can take two months to infiltrate cells and attack the body, so some victims still may be coming.

The worst food poisoning outbreak in America before this fall’s tainted cantaloupes was in 1924, when people who ate raw oysters in New York City were afflicted with typhoid. The death toll then was 150 persons, and over 1,500 suffered in some way.
