TRAFFIC NEWS: PEDESTRIAN DIES WHEN HIT BY TOW TRUCK

by Bruce Westbrook

A 73-year-old woman who has not yet been identified died after she was hit by a tow truck while crossing a street in southwest Houston Monday.

The auto-pedestrian accident occurred at Bellaire and South Gessner around mid-afternoon. The woman reportedly tripped and fell, and the driver of the tow truck didn’t see her as he pulled out of a grocery store parking lot.

The woman later died at a local hospital. The driver of the tow truck was not charged.

Pedestrian safety can involve pedestrians themselves as much as the drivers of vehicles.

Jim S. Adler & Associates urges all drivers to be alert and to yield to all pedestrians at all times. We also urge all pedestrians not only to use clearly marked crosswalks and to obey traffic “walk” lights, but also to look in every direction before and while crossing a street, parking lot or sidewalk near a driveway.

More than 4,000 American pedestrians die in auto-pedestrian accidents each year.
