Swiss drug company’s botched bottles may threaten American consumers

Do you feel safe when it comes to the drugs you buy to protect your health? If so, maybe you shouldn’t. Maybe wariness is more fitting when you focus on pharmaceuticals.

Take this outrage from Swiss drug maker Novartis. It’s recalling some containers of Bufferin, NoDoz, Excedrin and Gas-X due to worries that they may have broken or chipped tablets or random pills from other medicines. (more…)

Need SSDI disability payments? Get in line — or get our help

Many Americans can’t afford to wait until they reach 65 to get financial help from Social Security. They suffer from physical or mental impairments which prevent them from working and earning a living. If disabled, they then qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance, regardless of age.

But SSDI payments are difficult to get. Fully 75 per cent of all first-time claims are rejected, often on technicalities. And if you appeal, the Social Security Administration has an enormous backlog of cases to consider. (more…)

TRAFFIC NEWS: DALLAS’ STEMMONS REOPENING AFTER SEMI CRASH

Dallas’ Stemmons Freeway, also known as I-35E, is reopening after an early morning crash of a semi truck shut down the southbound freeway north of downtown. A tractor trailer reportedly jackknifed and overturned, blocking the freeway.

Police said the driver of the 18 wheeler apparently lost control as the big rig hit a guardrail near Houston Street and the diesel truck overturned. The driver was not seriously injured, but the large truck’s load of scrap metal spilled across the freeway at the traffic accident site.

The freeway was completely closed for the inbound morning commute up until about 8:30 a.m., when one lane was reopened and much of the debris had been moved to the side of the road. Until then, much of the Stemmons traffic was redirected to I-30.

Defective hip implants can mean major settlements

Today’s onslaught of failed hip implants is more than a trend. It’s the most widespread medical implant failure in decades, according to the New York Times.

The problem concerns metal-on-metal implants used in hip replacement surgery. These grind tiny shards of toxic metal that’s released into the body, harming tissues and even causing crippling injuries. Such implants also tend to wear out far faster than the 15 years that they’re supposed to last, thus requiring “replacement surgery” for yet another artificial hip. (more…)

Rejections of Social Security Disability claims echo insurance business

We’re often told in TV ads that insurance companies will put us in good hands or cover us with a protective umbrella. We’re reassured that insurers will readily — if not eagerly — pay us when we file a claim. After all, it’s their job, so we needn’t worry.

But for many insurers, these are hollow claims if not outright falsehoods. That’s because many insurance companies, as a standard practice, try to delay, underpay or deny payments to their clients. (more…)

Texas attorney Jim Adler contributes to Lombardi Award’s cancer fight

Jim S. Adler, founder of Jim S. Adler & Associates, and son William Scott Adler, an attorney and member of the firm, joined the fight against cancer as part of this year’s 42nd Annual Rotary Lombardi Award presented to Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly Wednesday night.

The firm’s $2,500 yearly sponsorship for Rotary Club of Houston’s event gives assistance to Texas Children’s Hospital Cancer Center, MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital and the American Cancer Society.

“Bill and I share the Rotary Club of Houston’s passion for fighting cancer and compassion for the innocent children and others who suffer from the disease,” Jim Adler said. “We are thrilled that this prestigious event can do so much for such a worthy cause.”

The Rotary Lombardi Award was named after legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, a two-time Super Bowl winner who died of cancer in 1970. Presented to Division IA college football’s best linebacker or offensive or defensive lineman as a trophy made of granite, it embodies Lombardi’s grit, determination and discipline and is the only award open to all college linemen.

Lombardi’s widow, Marie Lombardi, authorized the Rotary Club of Houston to launch the award in her late husband’s name soon after his death.

Also honored at this year’s presentation at Reliant Center was Jim Kelly, former quarterback of the University of Miami, the USFL’s Houston Gamblers and the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Kelly received the Rotary Lombardi Humanitarian Award. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Kelly has championed the cause of disadvantaged and disabled children.

Others attending Wednesday night’s event were fellow finalists Courtney Upshaw, University of Alabama linebacker; Dont’a Hightower, University of Alabama linebacker; and Jonathan Martin, Stanford University offensive tackle, along with their respective coaches.

The award winner was chosen by a committee of 500 college football coaches, sports media personnel and former Rotary Lombardi Award winners and finalists. Twelve semifinalists were picked in late October, from which the four finalists were selected earlier this month.

Designed by Houston artist Mark Storm, the award consists of a 40-pound block of granite resting on a mounted silver pedestal.

Adler firm attorneys meet Lombardi Award finalists

Three attorneys from Jim S. Adler & Associates met the four finalists for the 42nd Annual Rotary Lombardi Award at Wednesday night’s ceremonies at Reliant Center.

Attending were firm founder Jim S. Adler and attorneys Andrew Wilbur Jr. and William Scott Adler, Jim S. Adler’s son. They met Lombardi Award finalists Luke Kuechly, a Boston College linebacker; Courtney Upshaw and Dont’a Hightower, both University of Alabama linebackers; and Jonathan Martin, a Stanford University offensive tackle.

As a participant and sponsor for the Rotary Club of Houston event, the Adler law firm contributed financially to its mission of supporting the American Cancer Society, Texas Children’s Hospital Cancer Center and MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital.

“We believe in the cause that Rotary Club of Houston champions for the Lombardi Award,” said Jim S. Adler. “Innocent children — and all Americans — can benefit from the research and care empowered by this noble effort.”
