Turn Signals Causing Car Accidents


Which is more dangerous, failing to use turn signals, forgetting to turn them off or distracted driving?

Surprise!  Drivers who don’t use turn signals at all or forget to turn them off cause more than two million accidents every year. That’s more than double the 950,000 accidents attributed to texting and driving and talking on cell phones while driving, says a recent study by the Society of Automotive Engineers. (more…)

TRAFFIC NEWS: HPD OFFICER INJURED IN COLLISION


A Houston Police Department officer making a traffic stop was injured and taken to a local hospital Tuesday afternoon when a vehicle struck the rear of his police car on southbound State Highway 288 near Reed Road.

The officer has not yet been identified for the public by the police. His injuries are believed to be minor. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment. (more…)

TRAFFIC NEWS: SPEED + CELL PHONE = FATALITY


Houston Police are investigating a fatal traffic collision Wednesday afternoon in which the driver who died apparently was both speeding and using his cell phone at the time.

Police said a man driving a Ford Taurus on US 290 inbound at Mangum apparently lost control of his vehicle, overcorrected and veered across several traffic lanes, hitting at least two other vehicles in the process. (more…)

TRAFFIC NEWS: DRUNK, WRONG WAY DRIVER ARRESTED


Traffic on North Shepherd near downtown Houston was stalled early Tuesday when a driver going the wrong way on the street collided with a Chevy Suburban headed the right way immediately north of  Interstate 10. 

Houston police took the driver into custody. They said the driver was arrested on suspicion of DWI, or driving while intoxicated.

The woman in the other vehicle suffered what were reported to be back and neck injuries. She was taken to a local hospital, according to KHOU, Channel 11.

Police needed about 30 minutes to clear the accident scene, which meant North Shepherd was closed during that time.

TRAFFIC NEWS: ROCKETS GUARD UNINJURED


Houston Rockets guard Courtney Lee was uninjured in a serious traffic accident in downtown Houston over the weekend. But the driver of the other vehicle was badly injured and was hospitalized.

According to a Rockets spokesman, Lee was four or five blocks from Toyota Center several hours after Saturday night’s game with the New York Knicks when another vehicle traveling at high speed apparently ran a red light and hit his Cadillac. Lee said his car’s airbags spared him and two passengers from injury.

On Sunday Lee tweeted: “Thanking God right now!!! Thanking Cadillac for airbags!! Without them I could have lost my life tonight and two others close to me.” He also tweeted three photos of the collision’s aftermath.

Lee, 26, is in his second season with the Rockets.

TRAFFIC NEWS: 5 STUDENTS IN ALDINE SCHOOL BUS CRASH ON I-45 N


Five Aldine ISD students were in a school bus crash Monday morning on the North Freeway, and several had what were believed to be minor injuries. 

The students’ bus was traveling south on I-45 North when the accident occurred about 9 a.m. The bus and another vehicle collided near the Gulf Bank exit.

Among the students was a child who attended Reece Early Childhood Pre-Kindergarten and four children who attended Bethune and Anderson elementary schools. One student was taken to school, but as a precaution, the other four were taken to Texas Children’s Hospital.

No other details were immediately available.

Statistically, school buses are a relatively safe means of transportation. However, about two dozen students die each year in school bus accidents in the United States, and many more are injured.

Massive wreck causes legal tangle


A 79-car pile-up near Beaumont, Texas had authorities scrambling in the early morning hours of Thursday, January 5, 2012.

News reports said that 54 people were taken to Beaumont area hospitals. Officials used the Jaws of Life to cut three victims out of wrecked cars. Victims injured in the accident were said have injuries ranging from broken bones to abrasions and whiplash.

San Antonio has Texas’ drunkest drivers


San Antonio drivers, beware! The Alamo City now has the distinction, if you want to call it that, of being on a list of the “drunkest cities” in the United States.

The list is compiled every year by The Daily Beast, a top-ranked national website for news and political blogs. The Daily Beast added San Antonio to its list on Jan. 2, 2012.

TRAFFIC NEWS: 54 INJURED IN 50-VEHICLE PORT ARTHUR PILEUP


A mix of early morning fog and smoke from marsh wildfires was blamed for poor visibility which led to a pileup of at least 50 vehicles on Texas 73 near Port Arthur Thursday morning. Fifty-four people were injured, four critically, investigators said.

The pileup occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m. Thursday with a number of related accidents on the highway’s eastbound lanes. The location was west of the Taylors Bayou bridge and near the Veolia Processing Plant.

TRAFFIC NEWS: Tollway accident turns deadly as car overturns


October 26, 2011: Sam Houston Tollway was the scene of a fatal accident at 9:20 a.m.Police said a Chevrolet Trailblazer sped through a tool booth, hit a concrete divider, bounced off another divider and struck a Mercury Mountaineer. The Mountaineer rolled over, killing its passenger. The driver of the Trail Blazer was taken to the hospital. Police suspect he may be in the country illegally since he had no driver’s license or insurance. His passenger fled the scene.
