Archive for the 'motorcycle accident' CategoryTRAFFIC NEWS: MOTORCYCLIST HURTA man taking a “joyride” on a motorcycle owned by a friend was injured critically Thursday night in far north Harris County, reported Harris County Sheriff’s deputies.
The accident occurred about 9 a.m. on the feeder road of the North Freeway over Cypress Creek. Deputies said the motorcyclist was not familiar with motorcycles and was heading north on the feeder at high rate of speed when he crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The man on the motorcycle was not wearing protective helmet and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Also injured were two small children who were riding in the back seat of the vehicle that was hit from behind. Reportedly the vehicle’s rear window shattered and the children suffered cuts from the glass. Under Texas law, motorcycle operators and passengers over 21 years old are not required to wear a protective helmet. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, when Texas abandoned its law requiring helmets on all motorcyclists in 1997, operator fatalities rose by 31 percent in the next year under the new law. That law remains in effect. |

The accident occurred sometime before 9 a.m. Wednesday, when the motorcyclist’s body was discovered beneath Highway 225, which crosses the loop just east of its intersection with the Gulf Freeway. Houston Police are investigating. The victim’s identity has not yet been released. Police said the motorcyclist was riding on the South Loop and headed toward the Highway 225 exit when his motorcycle went off a freeway overpass. The motorcyclist was dead at the scene.

The mighty Harley-Davidson has opted to settle rather than face another trial in the case of a paralyzed Chicago firefighter who says a defect caused his Harley motorcycle “to wobble and crash on an Arizona Interstate Highway in March 2004,” according to a report in the Chicago Tribune. Mollenauer survived, and witnesses even got the car’s license number. Yet again, no charges have been filed, even though the driver’s identity is known. Some say that’s because Texas treats cyclists and pedestrians as second-class citizens. If a car strikes property and damages it, then its driver is legally liable for negligence. If a car strikes a person in a motorcycle accident, bicycle accident or pedestrian accident, the car’s driver may face no penalty at all — even in a hit and run! |
