Auto recalls reveal dangers for drivers


Auto recalls are leaving drivers in the ditch when it comes to safety.

The latest involve Ford and Chrysler. They were announced on December 30, 2010. They affect 160,000 vehicles – 15,000 Ford trucks and crossover SUVs that have a glitch in their electrical systems that can start a fire and 145,000 Chrysler trucks and crossover wagons with steering, stalling and air bag concerns.

Last year may have set a record for recalls. They accelerated in late 2010 when at least one million cars were recalled during October and November for potentially dangerous defects. The ten automakers involved in those recalls were known for some of the most reliable cars on the road,  according to the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. They included BMW, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Nissan, General Motors, Aston Martin, Isuzu, Hyundai and Nissan.

In a rash of child drownings, even summer’s end is a prime time for learning to swim


With summer winding down, chances are high that most parents aren’t thinking about swimming lessons for their kids. But any time is a good time to help your child protect himself or herself in the water — especially in view of Houston’s recent rash of child drownings.

After a 15-month-old boy drowned when he climbed into a bathtub Aug. 3, already this year Houston has had more child drownings — 25 — than in all of 2007 combined — 22.

Children drown for many reasons, including improperly maintained, supervised and illuminating swimming pools. But as a reader who wrote to this blog has stressed, many such drownings could have been prevented if the child simply knew how to swim properly. (more…)
