Problems continue for Ortho Evra

The latest lawsuits filed against the Ortho Evra’s manufacturer Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson demonstrate that problems and complications among women using the Ortho Evra birth control patch continue.

The claim in the lawsuits is that more than 40 women using the Ortho Evra patch have experienced significant health problems, including blood clots and other difficulties. One recent case filed reports that a Ortho Evra caused the death of a woman.

“We were saddened for these women and their families but not surprised by the news of these cases,” says a prosecuting attorney who represents women who have used the Ortho Evra patch. “All of the women we’ve met with and all of the research we’ve done suggest that this is a real problem and that women are being harmed by using this drug.”

Ortho Evra is a patch that prevents pregnancy by releasing the estrogen and progestin through the skin. In September, the FDA approved new label information for Ortho Evra, following a study that proved that women who use the patch are twice as likely to experience blood clots than those who used a traditional oral contraceptive pill. Additionally, the FDA has requested additional testing on the drug.

Of the many women who have filed suit against the manufacturer of the Ortho Evra birth control patch, one client developed potentially life-threatening blood clots in her lungs. She suffered a miscarriage after using the Ortho Evra patch. Currently, her claim is pending in federal court in Marshall, Texas.
