Tainted peanut butter makes the public sick to its stomach

By Mitchell L. Ginsburg

San Antonio, Texas --  In February of this year, the FDA warned consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan and Great Value Peanut Butter.  Jars of Peter Pan and Great Value Peanut Butter labeled with the product code "2111" have all been recalled because the peanut butter is contaminated with Salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious food poisoning leading to fever, diarrhea and severe abdominal cramps.  Reports have indicated that many people have been sickened and some have been hospitalized after eating the tainted peanut butter.  Great Value Peanut Butter is distributed locally by WalMart.

Renowned Texas personal injury attorney Jim Adler advises that "Everyone needs to check their jars of Peter Pan and Great Value Peanut Butter.  If the jar is marked with product code "2111" it has been recalled.  If your peanut butter has this product code, don’t eat it!"

When asked what the public should do with the jars of tainted peanut butter that are still in their cabinets, Jim Adler cautions against throwing away the jar.  "While the FDA told the public to throw away the jars of peanut butter, I don't advise throwing the jars away.  This is important evidence in any claim you may have against ConAgra, the company that manufactured the peanut butter."

Instead, Mr. Adler recommends that once you confirm that your jar of peanut butter has been  recalled, you should put on some rubber gloves before touching the jar and then seal the jar in a Ziploc bag.

"If you got sick after eating the contaminated peanut butter, if you throw the jar away, you have thrown away your evidence," added Adler.  While the Center for Disease Control has identified the strain of Salmonella in the peanut butter to be the rare Salmonella Tennessee strain, unless a person was tested specifically for Salmonella poisoning, the jar of peanut butter is the best evidence of what made them sick.
