A native of East Texas’ Piney Woods, Ray Cantu is passionate about helping disabled persons get the payments they legally deserve.
“Many people who are disabled are denied time and time again by the Social Security Administration,” Ray says. “I want to be the person who facilitates what the client needs and what the courts are offering. The legal system is confusing to clients, and I’m here to help them present their claim and provide their best legal recourse.”
An associate attorney in the Channelview office of Jim Adler & Associates, Ray moved to Houston to launch his law career after earning a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stephen F. Austin State University and graduating with honors from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University.
Ray specializes in disability claims, for which he applies knowledge he gained working in the mental health field as well as in social services. “I understood how many indigent clients have little recourse regarding services,” he says. “I became a lawyer to have a greater opportunity to help those in need.”
His clients often have medical issues and are unable to work, perhaps due to injuries suffered on the job or in auto accidents. Ray helps them obtain disability benefits as well as medical coverage.
“Having worked in the medical field for several years, I can use my medical terminology background and risk management skills to help bolster my client’s cases,” Ray says. “Reading a medical record can be tedious, but an insider’s edge helps since I understand medical coding and documentation.”
Among worthy causes Ray supports are mental health programs in the community. He also supports Special Olympics events and community programs for the homeless.
Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas, Ray is a member of the State Bar of Texas. He and his wife of 15 years enjoy travel and are fans of pro hockey teams the Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks. Ray also collects vinyl albums and considers himself to be a “technophile.”
